Accessibility for Empowerment: Leveraging Tech for Students with Learning Disabilities
How does technology make learning possible and practical for all students? How might we use the best available technology tools to support students on their journey to becoming more independent, empowered learners?
This workshop is an introduction to identifying signs that students exhibit when they need learning supports, an explanation of learning disabilities, and an exploration of the technology tools you can use to empower students to advocate for themselves and become independent learners.
Attendees will be able to identify which tools to use to effectively support and accommodate learners with language based learning disabilities. Attendees will leave with strategies and tools for immediate integration and implementation on small and large scales.
Presenter Bio
Fueled by passion for education and social equity, Nerissa always wanted to be an educator. Nerissa worked as a peer and youth educator with the Breakthrough Collaborative, an educational enrichment program for underserved students. After graduating from Mount Holyoke College (University) with a BA in African American and Gender Studies, Nerissa taught on the West Side of Chicago for two years. It was during that time in Chicago that Nerissa was introduced to the world of educational technology and has not looked back since.
Nerissa currently works as an Educational Technology Integrator at Mary McDowell Friends School, a Quaker school for students with learning disabilities. Talk to Nerissa about: assistive technology, technology integration in K-12 education, technology and student voice, digital citizenship, media literacy, technology and social justice. Nerissa is returning to ETSA after her extremely well-received EdTech Summit Africa workshops in 2018. We are all lucky to have her back!
