Workshop Description

Media Literacy: Using Interactive Slide Decks to Engage Learners

South African young people consistently use technology without thinking about the outcomes or consequences of the decisions they make online. This workshop will explore digital citizenship activities that you can use in your classroom and adapt for your students to help them to think critically about their digital footprint. In this workshop you will use strategies and technology that will help students to learn, communicate and collaborate safely, responsibly, and creatively.

Presenter Bio

Martin is a walking, talking example of – and advocate for – what bringing together technology with education can do to change the lives of not only young South African learners but also teachers and the community as a whole. Growing up in a disadvantaged community sparked his curiosity to use education and technology to bring about change and enable his peers to participate in growing the economy. Through the power of the internet, Martin has been able to help amplify the marginalised voices of the community that raised him.

Martin believes in working to promote and encourage change in the school system – supporting educators to themselves confidently learn to use, implement and benefit from some of the EdTech tools that are available free on the internet. Martin believes that this is essential for giving a voice to those who need it most. These tools are needed to promote positive social impact in communities and ultimately enable sustainable economic growth in our country.

Martin’s professional experience includes working as a Volunteer Database Administrator for The Social Collective before joining the Project Isizwe team as a Marketing Coordinator and Administrator in 2016. Martin’s ambition, and excellent communication and leadership skills, enabled him to grow within the organisation, seeing him head up the CO4ZA leadership team in 2017. For the last two years, Martin has worked at Namola, heading up operations in the 24 hour response centre. Martin is a qualified radio broadcaster, founder and producer of ZAsong Online Radio, and has studied Online Marketing and Technical Application.
