Workshop Description

Flipgrid: Using Video Reflection for Powerful Social Learning


Flipgrid is a popular (and free) education-focused video platform with over 20 million users worldwide.  With any camera-enabled device, students can respond to teachers’ questions through video, and see their answers posted with other students on the classroom “grid”.  Learn how a 3rd grade class used video reflections to collaborate on an engineering design, and how a 7th grade language teacher uses the platform to encourage peer-to-peer spoken communication.  Hear how Flipgrid inspires students to think more deeply, and get tips to make sure every student voice is heard. You will be able to start your own Flipgrid to use in your classes the next time you teach!

Flipgrid feels like the best parts of Facebook or Twitter without the free-for-all.  See how video reflection is applicable to all subjects and how it can deepen a discussion or facilitate more efficient student collaboration. Students will learn from one another while having fun and teachers gain a powerful tool for assessment.


Presenter Bio

Jimmy Santosa is the Instructional Technology Coordinator at Cathedral School for Boys, an Episcopal school serving 265 students in San Francisco, California.  Jimmy began teaching nine years ago as the kindergarten assistant at Cathedral, working towards his multi-subject credential from the Bay Area Teacher Training Institute (BATTI), and San Francisco State University.  He taught 5th & 6th-grade science for five years, infusing engineering and technology into his lessons. Prior to teaching, Jimmy was a mechanical engineer in the semiconductor industry and holds B.S.E and M.S.E degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor.  

In his present role, Jimmy coaches teachers on technology integration and leads the technology program. He has implemented a 1:1 iPad program and enjoys working with students from kindergarten to eighth grade on becoming good digital citizens and fearless problem solvers. Recently, he has become excited about sharing apps that amplify students’ voice, ideas and ability to collaborate.  He is a native of Wilmington, Delaware and enjoys cooking with friends, swimming, and playing the saxophone.
