Markus Campbell

Bio

Markus is currently undertaking a scholarly endeavor in pursuit of his Master’s Degree in Public Administration at Columbia University in New York City. Prior to entering the reality of adulthood, Markus had hoped to become a professional football player when he grew up. Luckily for everyone else, this did not happen. Instead, Markus found passion in education and public service.

Currently, Markus serves the community at Columbia University as a Program Assistant at the Earth Institute’s Center for Environmental Sustainability and as an Educational Leadership Consultant to the university’s Urban Education Leaders Program. As a Program Assistant Markus works to enhance the overall learning experiences of students and manages internet-based learning platforms for online courses. In his position as an Educational Leadership Consultant, Markus collaborates with educators and school board members at schools throughout the United States. The work Markus completes for his university is important to educational communities throughout globe and the amount he has accomplished in these capacities is extensive.

Before taking on the responsibilities of being a Program Assistant and an Educational Leadership Consultant, Markus served Columbia through the position of Assistant Donor Relations Coordinator, which involved cultivating major donors while broadening the donor base. He also created and distributed online content for potential donors to review. Markus excelled in this position, allowing him to be honored with the Donor Relations Appreciation Award. Prior to beginning work at Columbia University, Markus earned his Undergraduate Degree in Philosophy and Religion from the State University of New York College at Old Westbury. While completing his degree, Markus worked as the Recreational and Athletic Facilities Manager. For his outstanding work ethic, performance, and commitment, Markus earned the Ted Panteles Award.

Markus started out his career in public service as a Community Development Specialist for the Frederick Douglass Resource Center in Rochester, New York. In this position he created educational and community outreach programs in addition to designing and managing civic-related activities in order to address social and economic issues in the community.

In his spare time, Markus practices the arts of Qi Gong Therapy, Capoeira, and Tai Chi. He is interested in holistic, alternative care and strives to better his well-being every day. He has taught others these arts as well during his time at SUNY and Columbia. Markus is always looking for new and exciting ways to challenge himself both mentally and physically. He hopes to finish his Master’s Degree by the end of 2015 and then go on to earn a Doctorate from Harvard.

What does a learning disability look like? How can educators help their students overcome their learning challenges? You are invited to learn from a student’s perspective: the struggles with identifying a personal learning disability, the obstacles faced, and the tools they found along the way that empowered them to stand where they are today. In this hands-on workshop, teachers will explore their own strengths and challenges, break down education related resources, work together to identify the strengths and weaknesses in the classroom, and create a short and long term goal plan.
